UFO Article - Chiles and Witted UFO Affair

On a hot July afternoon a UFO was spotted in Montgomery , Alabama , Eastern Airlines commercial pilots Captain Clarence S. Chiles and co-pilot John B. Witted, flying a DC-3 from Houston , Texas to Atlanta , Georgia , not only saw a cigar-shaped UFO, but almost collided with it.

The flight had been uneventful so far. While cruising at 5000 feet, the pilots suddenly saw a glowing red light close ahead, right in their flight path. At first, they thought it was an unreported jet plane.

Suddenly the UFO screamed by them at a distance of about 1000-feet. It had a pointed nose but no wings and no tail. The belly of the UFO had a bluish glow all around and from the rear came an orange-red exhaust. They saw two rows of windows, and the exhaust of the UFO was as long as the length of a B-29 bomber, but it was much wider.

The UFO abruptly pulled up after missing them, then made a vertical ascent and disappeared instantly. The pilots felt no disturbance from the air waves, nor was there any “wash” or mechanical disturbance. Most of the passengers had been asleep, as this was about 2:30 in the morning. However, one passenger, Clarence McKelvie, American editor of the American Education Press, at Columbus , Ohio , said he saw a UFO without shape or form on the right side of the plane. It passed, leaving a strange, eerie streak of orange. He went on to say that it wasn't lightning. Witnesses on the ground at Robbins Air Force Base saw the UFO as well. The government ruled out the possibility of conventional aircraft.
